Best Wedding Venues in Melbourne

Many of Melbourne’s best wedding venues can be found on the cusp of the city. The inner burbs – the type of places where million-dollar houses sit happily next to apartments stacked Heaven high.

Here’s some select choices…

Abbotsford Convent

I dig the Abbotsford convent for two very practical reasons:

  • It has those country town feels but is only a stone’s throw away from the bustle of Melbourne. It’s the type of area my Aunty Lorraine would love (she’s from Kyabram).

  • It’s literally two hundred metres away from my home. I could almost officiate your ceremony from my balcony.

These are some delicious surrounds, from the wonderful animals to the crystal-clear waters of the Yarra, and even a hint of hipster in the parklands.

I often go for a stroll through to contemplate life with my headphones on, mostly focusing on Hot Chip and classic Arctic Monkeys.

Panama

I’ve completed more ceremonies at Panama than any other venue. It’s centrepiece? The the gorgeous New York styled windows. Look out them and you’ll almost feel like you’re in meat packing districts of Manhattan… well, aside from the TAB sitting directly opposite it.

But it’s a cracking venue and hugely popular.

BONUS FACT – I actually did my first ever ceremony there for my Macedonian friend and 90s sitcom enthusiast Daniel Besliev.

Quat Quatta

I like the vibe of Quat Quatta. I’m a sucker for that 1940s feel, right down to the high ceiling and chequered black and white tiles.

There’s a gorgeous spot out the back where all the ceremonies go down, and it’s always a pleasure tiptoeing through the leafy surrounds of Ripponlea.

Oh and pro tip – if you’re a guest get there early go around the back for parking rather than the front.

St Andrews Conservatory

If you are going for that ‘part pub, part wedding’ feel, St Andrew’s Conservatory will tick every single box. Plus, a couple more.

It’s a lovely little space out the back and the staff are always helpful.

They also usually play the tunes for me, which helps me out a bunch. Make sure you arrive early, as - like most of the wedding venues in Melbourne - getting a park is as rare as a free trip to Cancun. But, otherwise, it’s five stand-up celebrant thumbs up from me.

Twotonmax

The peculiar titled towtonmax in North Melbourne is an excellent, all contained space. Your ceremony will take place in the front room while the staff are busily prepping the reception space behind it.

I’m intrigued as to the name. Is the Max the owner? Is he really that heavy? All that more in the next edition of Melbourne best wedding venues…
